{"ops":[{"insert":"This is my oldest surviving decklist and a heavily upgraded version of the Kalamax precon deck from Commander 2020. The deck leans heavily into copying instants with Kalamax, with the goal of either getting Kalamax to a high enough power to deal lethal commander damage or accumulating enough triggered effects (think of things like: Archmage Emeritus, Guttersnipe, Storm-Kiln Artist and Young Pyromancer) to grind out value. Let's dig into some of the deck's lines of play:\n\nAdditional ways to copy spells / effects :\nDualcaster Mage\nDisplay of Power\nIncreasing Vengeance\nSwarm Intelligence\nVeyran, Voice of Duality\n\nWhile Kalamax itself can only copy the first instant you cast each turn, it does get a +1/+1 counter each time you copy a spell by other means as well. So while we'll ideally cast an instant each turn, we can still rack up a lot of incremental value with Kalamax by other means of copying spells. You'll want to be careful with Swarm Intelligence and Veyran specifically since they're more fragile than the other spell copying effects.\n\nWays to pump Kalamax for huge damage:\nBalduvian Rage\nBlackblade Reforged (a classic)\nFists of Flame (a fantastic first spell to copy)\nTemur Battle Rage\nTyvar's Stand (great for X = 0 or X = 16)\nWildsize\nWoodcutter's Grit\n\nWhile I always advocate for casting at least one spell per turn while Kalmax is out, you also need to be careful to not make Kalamax too large of a threat while still being not lethal nor exposing Kalamax to removal while attacking. Like most Voltron decks, you'll want to focus on a single opponent with Kalamax and try to knock them out without leaving yourself completely vulnerable.\n\nWays to get added advantage from casting instants:\nArchmage Emeritus\nCharmbreaker Devils (one time, I killed an opponent by casting three spells with an unblockable Charmbreaker Devils and then countering the third spell myself to get an extra trigger and deal lethal damage. It was EPIC)\nGuttersnipe\nMurmuring Mystic\nStorm-Kiln Artist \nTalrand, Sky Summoner\nYoung Pyromancer\n\nThese are often great cards to play while ramping up / before you play Kalamax. They'll let you accrue incremental advantage for doing what you're already planning to do and present threats from additional angles. Archmage Emeritus, Charmbreaker Devils and Storm-Kiln Artist are almost always winners, but the token-generators also do a great job of helping you stay alive and chip away at opponent's life totals.\n\nProtection for Kalamax or other high priority threats:\nBolt Bend (Kalamax always reduces its cost!)\nCounterspell\nPact of Negation (I'm iffy on this one, but a Voltron deck feels right)\nLightning Greaves\nSnakeskin Veil\nSwiftfoot Boots\nTyvar's Stand\nWhispersilk Cloak\nWinged Boots\nWoodcutter's Grit\n\nI would always focus on protecting Kalamax first and foremost with these, but there may be time that some of your other advantage pieces need to be protected too. \n\nThat's it!
