Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"This deck started out years ago as a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Reaper King"}},{"insert":" deck, with Scarecrows and Changelings. It was fun, but bad. I gradually started adding slivers to power up the changelings, not planning on making an actual sliver deck. As slivers began to comprise more and more of the deck, it became clear that it would just be much stronger as a legitimate Sliver deck. Thus, the bones of Reaper King were put back on the shelf, and I started to experiment with different Sliver commanders, eventually settling on "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sliver Overlord"}},{"insert":" .  The deck was good enough, but I often felt like I was just top-decking slivers and hoping for the best, as Sliver Overlord is slow and mana intensive, and it would frequently get removed before I could start using it.\n\nCoincidentally, right around the time I was more or less finalizing that version of the deck, Modern Horizons was released, and with it The First Sliver, the best Sliver commander. It went into the command slot easily, and the deck was immediately much more powerful. I also happened to have an unused "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Food Chain"}},{"insert":" which fit right in as well, along with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eternal Scourge"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Misthollow Griffin"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Squee, the Immortal"}},{"insert":" .\n\nNow, many The First Sliver decks use Food Chain and The First Sliver to cascade their deck out into a combo, but they are really just combo-control-goodstuff decks without any other slivers at all. But all I ever wanted to do was just cascade-chain a bunch of Slivers out and swarm! There were plenty of Slivers, but a problem I kept encountering was stalling out by cascading into a non-sliver card...\n\n I'd cast an expensive Sliver, anticipating an exciting Sliver explosion, and after cascading once, never thought I would be so disappointed to see a Sol Ring.  "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nI decided to start taking out non-Sliver cards to increase the chances of hitting a long Sliver cascade chain, and it worked out so well that I eneded up with just a few non-Sliver cards, including Enlightened Tutor and Vampiric Tutor.  And here's where it clicked that when cascading off a 2 drop Sliver, I would always hit either one of the two tutors, or one of the three 1 drop Slivers - "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Striking Sliver"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Galerider Sliver"}},{"insert":" , or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Virulent Sliver"}},{"insert":" .  While these three Slivers are very good, I found myself always hoping to hit a tutor instead, so I took the three Slivers out. \n\nThis now meant that when cascading off a 2 drop Sliver, Food Chain could always go on top of the library, because I would only ever hit a tutor! "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWith this realization, I ended up taking out Eternal Scourge and Misthollow Griffin as they were not Slivers, and I could now much more consistently tutor for or cascade into Food Chain or Squee, the Immortal, Squee being the strongest of the three Food Chain creatures.  \n\nFollowing this line of thought, I also took out all of the non-Sliver 2 drops except for Demonic Tutor. Now, cascading off a 2 or 3 drop Sliver would ALWAYS tutor Food Chain or Squee to either the top of library or hand! Furthermore, the only thing stopping a 4 drop Sliver from ALWAYS cascading into a tutor would be 3 drop non-Sliver cards, like Food Chain and Squee, the Immortal. \n\nFrom here, it was easy to take out all other non-Sliver 3 and 4 drops so that almost anytime I cast a Sliver it would ALWAYS end up cascading into Food Chain, Squee, or a tutor.\n\nSo this is how the deck stayed for a while, and it was good... However, the two biggest problems it still had seemed related, and they revolved around a lack of ramp, and the fact that after casting The First Sliver, if I didn't have enough mana to cast a second Sliver to start the cascade chain that turn, and The First Sliver did not survive until my next turn, it would set me back a lot. I found myself waiting until turns seven or eight or later to cast The First Sliver with enough mana to be able to cast a second Sliver that turn. But I usually still had to wait another round or two to attempt a combo, while holding up Slivers in my hand and still hoping that The First Sliver would survive.  "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nThe only real ramp in the deck was "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Manaweft Sliver"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gemhide Sliver"}},{"insert":" , and I often wished that it made sense to fit "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Intruder Alarm"}},{"insert":" into the deck, as it would combo nicely with these two Slivers and cascade, but it definitely did not make sense, as didn't really synergize with any other cards, and could potentially benefit an opponent a lot more. So, I was left to wait until some new magical card would be printed which could make this feasible.\n\nEnter "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Jegantha, the Wellspring"}},{"insert":" .\n\nAt this point, most of the cards in the deck already met Jegantha's companion requirement, with notable exceptions being "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kindred Discovery"}},{"insert":" , "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kindred Summons"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Squee, the Immortal"}},{"insert":" . "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Telekinetic Sliver"}},{"insert":" . Kindred spells are great cards, and I am sad to see them go. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eternal Scourge"}},{"insert":" , while far inferior to Squee, was an easy replacement.\n\nNow there is the option of casting Jegantha on turn 5 instead of casting The First Sliver. If Jegantha ends up dying before our next turn, that's too bad, but at least it wasn't The First Sliver. If Jegantha does survive, now we can cast The First Sliver with Jegantha, leaving all our lands untapped to cast a second Sliver and start the cascade chain, and even potentially combo off, all on the same turn.  \n\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Intruder Alarm"}},{"insert":" with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gemhide Sliver"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Manaweft Sliver"}},{"insert":" and a Sliver that grants haste will untap each Sliver whenever you cast or cascade a Sliver."},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWhile this does not provide infinite mana like Food Chain and Eternal Scourge, it can provide ample mana to eventually cascade into either the Food Chain combo itself, or another sac outlet or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hibernation Sliver"}},{"insert":" to keep re-casting The First Sliver or any other.\n\nAt this point, the drawback of the Jegantha, the Wellspring + Intruder Alarm combo is the same as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Morophon, the Boundless"}},{"insert":" 's drawback, namely that they can't reduce generic mana cost. Cards like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Animar, Soul of Elements"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fist of Suns"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Jodah, Archmage Eternal"}},{"insert":" can work with Morophon, and to a lesser extent Jegantha to make sliver spells free to cast, which is really cool. However I'm hesitant to put them in as they do not interact as readily with The First Sliver, and do less on their own, so they seem like secondary combos to both Food Chain and Intruder Alarm.
