They spoke of travelers who wandered too deep and never returned, of hunters who found only the remnants of their companions—bones stripped clean, weapons shattered. Some claimed he was a man, once. Others said he was never human at all.\n\nIt always began the same way. The swamp would call—a lost child’s cry, the glint of gold in the mud, a will-o’-the-wisp flickering just beyond the treeline. Something irresistible, something that lured trespassers in.\n\nAnd then, the pursuit began.\n\nThose who entered never saw him at first. Only the signs: ripples in still water, footprints in the muck where none should be. The air grew thick, heavy with rot and something worse—something like hunger. A feeling of being watched, of being judged.\n\nThen, the first death.\n\nA hunter would step into a pool that was not water at all, but a mouth that dragged him down. A merchant would breathe in the wrong air, her lungs filling with unseen spores that ate her from the inside. A thief would slip in the mud, impaled upon a root that had not been there before.\n\nBut the others would not stop.\n\nThey never did.\n\nEach survivor—few as they were—had their own explanation.\n\nSome said Istvan had made a deal with something ancient, something that slithered through the waters unseen. That he was granted unholy power in exchange for an oath—to kill, to feed.\n\nOthers believed the swamp itself was his soul, that every vine, every crawling thing, was an extension of his will. That he did not walk the swamp—he was the swamp.\n\nThe most terrifying theory, though, was the simplest.\n\nThat Uncle Istvan was nothing more than a man.\n\nA man who could not be stopped.\n\nThey tried, of course.\n\nThe villagers had set the swamp alight once, great walls of flame devouring the reeds and trees. But when the smoke cleared, Istvan remained, standing among the charred husks, untouched.\n\nA warlord had sent his best men into the mire, armed with steel and fire. Not one returned. Weeks later, their bones were found strung from the trees, hollowed out as if something had sucked them dry.\n\nA priest—brave, foolish—had even called upon holy power, speaking words of banishment, of absolution. But Istvan had only laughed, a dry rasping sound like wind through dead leaves.\n\n“I have been here longer than your gods,” he had said. “And I will be here long after.”\n\nThe priest was found in the river the next morning, his body perfectly preserved, as though death itself had refused to claim him.\n\nIt was said that Istvan could not leave the swamp. That was their only mercy.\n\nBut woe to those who stepped inside.\n\nFor in the end, the hunt never ended. The swamp never tired.
