It's my understanding that this is pretty traditional for Dimir faerie builds, and I loved the play pattern, but I wanted to be a little less tryhard and a little more thematic. (Talion is on Omniscience so I need it for theme purposes, right???) Talion is pure value and punisher goodness. I designed the original deck assuming I would draw maybe one card per turn cycle from the Talion trigger, which was wise since Talion tends to be killed by spellslinger decks with grips full of two cmc spells. It was lovely surprise though to find that Talion will typically trigger 2-4 to times in a turn cycle depending on the decks you are playing against. A 3/4 flier is also meaningful body to have on the field. If I have other faeries for blocking, Talion will be able to get in 9-12 damage over the course of a game, and will otherwise be a decent blocker in their own right. Drawbacks to Talion in the command zone are notoriety and the amount of four cmc spells in the final decklist. Talion is a cEDH worthy commander, and when they helm your deck, you just have to accept the vibe you give off. The deck isn't aggro per se, or even that powerful in terms of control magic, but certain strategies suffer with a Talion on the field and will see you as a primary threat. The amount of other four cmc spells in the decks is problematic from a tempo standpoint. Talion is almost always the correct four cmc spell to cast, but it can lead to some awkward sequencing."},{"insert":"\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Obyra, Dreaming Duelist"},{"insert":" is my favorite of the five legendary creatures in terms of art/lore/mechanics and is the primary commander in mind for this final decklist. I see the color pie as a prism, and when my light shines through it, every color combination comes out closer to red than anything else. They will give you consistent drain for simply playing the deck, but digging for token generators is a priority while they are in the command zone. Feywild Visitor, Bitterblossom, and Archmage of Echoes are the stars of an Obyra deck, Feywild Visitor in particular being one of my favorite cards for incentivizing aggression when I might otherwise want to leave my little faeries up as blockers. If you tutor for token generators over combo pieces, combat damage and drain are undeniably viable win conditions. To further my pursuit in recreating red in not-red, or perhaps Izzet in non-Izzet, Obyra is a combo piece! Should you be able to infinitely cast, bounce, and recast faeries, the entire table will be drained to death because of Obyra's triggered ability. The entire deck is built around the multiple methods of achieving this. I will explain only my favorite, the combination of cards that only includes faeries. Step 1: Get Obyra in to play. Step 2: Get Archmage of Echoes + Glen Elendra Pranksters + High Fae Tricksters onto the battlefield. Casting them in that order will defend the combo with token copies of your essential pieces. Step 3: Tap four lands, even better if one of them is mana positive (Lotus Vale/Fields). Cast Faerie Squadron. Cast Cloud of Faeries, untapping four lands and bouncing Faerie Squadron back to hand. This will net you one to three mana depending on your lands. Step 4: Repeat infinitely, entirely draining the table of life! And one important thing to note, this must be done on an opponent's turn because of Glen Elendra Pranksters, and winning on other people's turns is the coolest thing you can do in this game. While this is my favorite variation on the combo, there are many ways to assemble it, and it is a fun game to have to 'solve' your deck in new ways, assembling the same kind of combo in a handful of different options. Also very important for the context of the deck, Evyn Fong, the artist for Obyra, also painted Ivy, Gleeful Spellthief, my other faerie tribal commander. So having two commanders of the same creature type painted by the same artist really seals the deal on Faeries being my favorite tribe in Magic."},{"insert":"\n"}]}
