Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"Brudiclad, Telchor Engineer"},{"attributes":{"header":1},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"This is my most up-to-date iteration of a pretty standard Brudiclad deck. I hope to keep this space updated as often as possible, both with the most recent version of this deck, as well as my thoughts on how the deck performs.\n\nWhy am a writing all of this up for a silly mid-tier commander deck?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Brudiclad, as a commander, fascinates me. Generally, I find that commanders fall in one of two broad categories. The first are commanders who have mechanics that are fairly straightforward to build around. Think Yuriko or Muldrotha, the card text itself lays out a fairly straightforward map for deck building. The second category I see are general \"good-stuff\" commanders. The are those who don't necessarily outline a particular deck archetype in their rules text, but could go well in almost any well constructed deck in their colors. These are cards like Atraxa and Kenrith, just to name a couple. Brudiclad stands out, to me at least, as someone who fits into neither of these two categories nicely.\n\nAt first one might think, \"wait a minute, Brudiclad's rule text clearly fits into this first arbitrary category you defined.\" This is exactly what I thought when I first sat down to construct this deck. To an extent, this is true, Brudiclad clearly tells you to make a lot of tokens, and control at least one token that would be a threat if it could be copied a large amount of times. However, I'd argue that this is, in practice, neither straightforward, nor sound strategy to guide your deck building.\n\nBruidiclad asks of his deck builder one main thing, token generation. However, we will easily see this main idea fracture into many moving pieces.\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Large scale, small token production."},{"insert":" The first part of Brudiclad's token generation strategy is to amass a small army of cheap tokens. Be these treasure tokens, clues, thopters, goblins, goats, etc. In all honesty, Blue and Red are quite good at this sort of thing. Both colors give good access to both moderate per turn token generation, as well as more explosive single-use generators. Token decks in Izzet colors are not want for generators; however, here we have a problem of scale. In most token decks you'll see around 20% of the deck be dedicated to generation. This gives the pilot a good chance of getting plenty of tokens to flood the board with at the beginning of the game, as well as the ability to bounce back if they are hit with a particularly brutal board wipe. However, this is not the only type of token Brudiclad wants."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Small scale, large token production."},{"insert":" Normally a deck decides to either go wide, or go tall. Brudiclad wants to go both. Along with the small army of tokens, we also want to provide Brudiclad with a few large targets. Big creatures that Brudiclad can morph all of our other tokens into. This is where we start having actual problems in Brudiclad's apparent deck building roadmap. Blue and Red just are not great producers of large tokens. Aside from the occasional dragon token, Izzet doesn't have nearly the tall token power of either White or Green. If all we needed to do was create small and large creature tokens, this would be simple. However, as we don't really have that ability in R/U, we need to expand our focus."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Create large tokens with copy effects."},{"insert":" Without the ability to generate large tokens on our own, we need help. That help comes in the form of copy target creature cards. Luckily, R/U have an abundance of these. In fact, steal/copy is so big that it is an archetype on its own. Sadly, just borrowing some copy cards is not enough. We also need cards to copy. You "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"could"},{"insert":" just rely on your opponents to play scary creatures. However, if your want to be autonomous, you need bombs of your own to copy. Thus leading to our final focus."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Big beefy creatures."},{"insert":" Brudiclad needs creatures to copy, and thus part of our deck has to be filled with game ending creatures. This now, of course, leads to its own problems. How do we even get scary creatures on the board that are worth copying? Therefor, not only do we need threats to copy, but ways to cheat them out, while still having enough many to run the rest of our deck."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWhile on the surface Brudiclad seems straightforward, his simple gameplay devolves into three nearly entirely different focuses: "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Amass Tokens, Play/Cheat Big Creatures,"},{"insert":" and "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Copy Creatures."},{"insert":" These three ideas pull from completely different archetypes to make this deck work. As such, Brudiclad asks the deck builder to commit to breaking one of the strongly held tenants of deck building: \"Keep your deck focused.\"\n\nThis is what makes Brudiclad so interesting to me. The rules of this card ask you to build a pretty specific deck; however, there seems to be no straightforward way to go about building that. In fact, the deck it asks you to build is contrary to how we normally think about deck building. Building Bruidiclad isn't just building a deck full of synergy and efficiency, it's a carful balancing act of filling your deck with cards that, for the most part, don't work well together, but perfectly harmonize when the missing piece is summoned from your command zone.\n\nSo back to that question, "},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"why am I writing all of this?"},{"insert":" Well, being such a balancing act, I think it would be a good practice to have a write up of what I have tried, haven't tried, what has worked, and what hasn't. Maybe along the way someone else may find this helpful as well, though I highly doubt anyone will ever see this description buried in Archidekt. In the end, I'd like this to become something between more than an annotated change log, but less than a full primer.\n\nCard Categories"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nIn this section I'll talk about the seven (maybe more/less?) categories in this deck. First broadly, then in more detail. Each subsection should break down the cards individually, or in groups of similar effects. \n\nDeck Insights"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nThis section should speak to how to play the deck. Talk about specific lines, what parts of the engine should be focused on first. What to tutor if given the chance, etc. Maybe looking at what types of hands to keep vs when to mulligan?\n\nOld Stuff"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nThe following text is the old write up while the deck was in beta and still being worked on. I'm keeping it here for now, as the entire write up is not complete. This section should be removed once the above is written.\n\nBrudiclad wants only two things, tokens, and big beefy boys to morph his token army into. This is going to be a fairly straightforward Brudiclad deck, focusing on balancing generating tokens, and creating tokens of large and impactful creatures.\n\nAbout a tenth of the deck is dedicated to token generation. This comes in the form of cards that generate about one token per turn. Assuming that we are slamming an impactful creature onto the field and copying it, I don't think we will need huge swarms of creatures at once, but rather a steady stream. Hopefully this could mitigate wipes and such.\n\nAnother fifth of the deck is made up of large impactful creatures, and ways to make token copies of them. Any one of those creatures could be a game ender if a few copies of them attacked at once.\n\nFinally there are five polymorph cards, these care to cheat out our big bois. The goal is to never be actually casting these large creatures for their mana cost, but morphing them from cheap tokens.\n\nTo-Do"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nFirst and foremost, PLAY THE DECK! Test out what works, and what doesn't.\n\nWrite the other sections of this description.\n\nCreate a spreadsheet for tracking wins/losses/notes\n\nChangelog"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n06.14.2021 - Version 1.0 is finalized. Introduction is written.\n"}]}
