And everyone knows better than to give the storm player a chance.\n\nBut what if instead of storming off on our own turn, we were responding to some threatening spell cast by an opponent? Well for one thing, that would mean any counterspells we draw will always have a target, meaning we can run way more of them than a typical storm list. For another, it will take a lot of the heat off. Being able to go for a win at instant speed, at the exact moment when the table has run out of interaction, is always a strong attribute for a deck to have. But in a storm deck, where a sequence that begins as a desperate search for a counterspell can end in a win attempt, it becomes impossible for our opponents to know when to counter our spells, and when to let them resolve.\n\nSo we've established that being able to consistently go for storm turns at instant speed would be pretty good, but how do we do it? With both of those in play, the deck contains 30 or so artifacts that can be cast off the top of the deck, for free, at instant speed, and an equally high number of effects that allow us to manipulate the top card of our deck.\n\nThis odd deck construction enables a gameplan where whenever an opponent does something that the table agrees we should try to stop, we can start churning through our deck, ostensibly in search of a counterspell, meeting little to no resistance, maybe even being protected by our opponents. Even running all the ramp available in our colors and adopting an aggressive mulligan strategy, this deck isn't going to be doing its thing until turn 3 or 4. There is a very reasonable amount of interaction in here, so it's not like the deck is completely defenseless in the first few turns, but it doesn't exactly compare favorably to other the other decks of the format, or to more conventional Elsha builds until it comes online.\n\nSo why play this deck over any of the more optimal decks you could play instead?
