Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"My flagship deck and one that has existed since before Commander was a format. Niv's Hands for Days has a simple goal in mind: Play Niv, draw cards. That's it. Niv himself is a minigun dressed up to look like a dragon, all he needs is cards fed into your hand to kill people. The major wearkness of Niv is his fat 6 colored pip mana cost. Most of the deck is built around controlling the flow of the game until Niv can stick, then annihilating the rest of the table. \n\nAs expected the bread and butter of the deck is the draw power. To make this guide more digestible I'm further subdividing the draw power into subsections based on the type of drawing. There's the 1 mana suite, good for the early game, build up storm, or cause triggers to fire later in the game. These include Brainstorm, Consider, Opt, Ponder, Preordain, and Serum Visions. Winds of Change gets a special mention here, since it is a full hand reset for the table. This card is useful for drawing a ton of cards in the late game, disrupting other players, or making the most disrespectful turn 1 play. \n\nOn that note, we have the Wheel effects. Since this deck runs several wheel variants that shuffle the graveyard back into the deck, these should be played liberally and often. Do not underestimate the value of constant disruption to opponent's strategy. Frequent hand resets can often lead to misplays on the opponent's side of the field. In this category we have Decaying Time Loop, Echo of Eons, Into the Fire, Time Spiral, Wheel of Fortune, Wheel of Misfortune, and Windfall. Previous incarnations of the deck have run Wheel of Fate and Magus of the Wheel and they work well enough if you are looking for a less powerful or more budget friendly option. \n\nA serious Niv deck would not be complete with one the three kill cards, Curiosity, Ophidian Eye, and Tandem Lookout. All three are there for Niv and give him the same ability: When he deals damage you draw a card. Critically it does not say \"combat damage,\" so any damage counts, and since Niv's own ability deals damage when you draw a card, it creates an infinite feedback loop of death. While both the damage and draw triggers are both non-optional, meaning you have to deal damage and you have to draw cards, the draw trigger only happens when you hit an opponent, so you have the option to cut the combo short by targeting a creature, planeswalker, or yourself, in case you don't have enough cards in deck to kill everyone. Even if you don't have enough potential draw to kill, you can still mill yourself out and win with Thassa's Oracle. And to really mess with players can always use Intuition to tutor up all three cards and force an opponent to pick one (the correct answer is Tandem Lookout, since creatures are easier to remove than auras, but don't tell them that). \n\nAnd now the rest of the draw spells. Blue Sun's Zenith and Expansion // Explosion turn into mana dumps for late game draw power, and the fact that Zenith shuffles itself back into the deck can lead to shenanigans in the right circumstances. Mystic Remora and Rhystic Study are more to set up for Niv rather than to support him once he hits the table. Sea Gate Restoration is a massive bomb of draw power, but you'll more often play it as Sea Gate, Reborn. Dack Fayden can be used as draw power or to steal key artifacts from other players (or their Sol Rings, if you're being cheeky). Frantic Search is basically just free cards. Ral, Crackling Wit can be used for draw power, but also as a win con if you're storming off. Lastly we have the psudo draw spells, Scroll Rack, Sensei's Divining Top, and Dig Trough Time. These are very effective at finding needed cards, but are not technically drawing so don't trigger Niv and friends.\n\nSpeaking of triggers, we have the trigger crew. Birgi, God of Storytelling, Urabrask, and Storm-Kiln Artist all produce mana as you cast spells, helping to extend the storm combos. Baral and Kari Zev give you either a free spell or creature token. And both Coruscation Mage, Ral, Storm Conduit, and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind add in more damage. If you are planning to lean more into the spellslinging over draw cards like Electrostatic Field, Kessig Firebreather, and Guttersnipe are also good inclusion. Since most of the triggered abilities are wizards, including Niv himself, Harmonic Prodigy is a must have. Especially since Niv-Mizzet, Parun has two triggered abilities that play off each other. So when someone casts an instant or sorcery Niv triggers, then prodigy copies him drawing two cards total, then each card draw triggers Niv to deal deal damage and the prodigy to copy those triggers, resulting in 2 card draws and 4 damage per spell cast. \n\nFor removal the deck runs Capsize, Cyber Conversion, Cyclonic Rift, Filter Out, and Vandal Blast. Rift and Blast are such staples that they need no explanation. Capsize is a relic of older iterations of the deck and is mostly included for nostalgia. Repeatable instant speed bounce is nice, but 6 mana a shot is sub-optimal without the Dramatic Scepter combo. Filter out works as a mini Cyc Rift for clearing out nasty artifacts and enchantments. And lastly there's Cyber Conversion, a card people are sleeping on. It turns any creature on the battlefield into a 2/2 with no abilities. Normally a blue deck would go for Imprison in the Moon for such an effect, but for decks that focus more on instant and sorceries Cyber Conversion gives similar results for less mana in a more relevant card type. \n\nSince the goal of the deck is survive until Niv shows up, the counterspell package is more robust than what I typically run. Counterspell is the default, there's the free trio of Fierce Guardianship, Force of Negation, and Force of Will. Mana Drain can be used to set up for big combo. And lastly there's Disallow and Counterflux. Disallow being able to hit activated and triggered abilities gives it an impressive range, being able to stop combos or planeswalker abilities. Counterflux is clunkier than the other counters, at URR cost, however the fact that it can't be countered and it can overload to counter storm gives it valuable edge uses. \n\nFor the most part the mana base is self explanatory. Play good U/R lands and the usual suspects for mana rocks. This deck also runs Baral, Chief of Compliance for a discount and the occasional draw when something is countered. Goblin Electromancer, Ral, Monsoon Mage, and Stormcatch Mentor gives a nice little discount for spells. Jeska's Will can give mana and sort of draw. Lastly is the Dramatic Reversal / Isochron Scepter combo for mana rocks. \n\nThen there's Mystical Tutor and Snapcaster, just as genericly good cards.\n"}]}
