Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"\t"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Kros, Defense Contractor"},{"insert":" is a fascinating take on a control commander in Bant colors; I was inspired to finally build this deck after pulling an Ichormoon Gauntlet and watching teen-superhero shows like Titans, Teen Titans, and Young Justice. There are many stories in these comics where a villain is able to exploit technology in order to turn the team of superheroes against each other, causing just enough chaos in the right places to be able to casually walk into a heavily fortified position (like the T-Tower.) Kros is uniquely suited for playing into this power fantasy because "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"the combination of tapped, goaded, and trample can force decks into a highly vulnerable position"},{"insert":". Additionally, there is almost 0 evasion-granting in this deck; so Kros truly does have to force a player's whole board into submission in order to get through. And make no mistake, the original intent of this build was to be able to control the board long enough to pump Kros to 1-shot levels; you will absolutely have to be able to swing into a player for lethal in order to win with this deck.\n\n\tBracket is a simple discussion. Creature Control with 6 Game changers and a theoretical infinite turns based win condition makes this a bracket 4 deck.\n\n\tAside from a modest Base Power; Kros's upkeep trigger is perhaps the least powerful part of the card, suffering from timing and targeting. That does not make it any less critical though, as a reliable source of counters is necessary in many games to begin developing your control. The fact that it is an upkeep trigger both helps and hurts as it allows you to make decisions about what untapped creature you could target but doesn't provide any immediate benefit for playing Kros. Shield counters themselves are interesting enough of a mechanic, and will frequently be preserved because of the granted trample and general unpopularity of trading creatures in combat. Any slow buildup of counters on opposing creatures is an important incremental advantage towards your end game. Additional cards that can goad one or more creatures per turn are very helpful; providing a means to keep key threats focused away from you. Placing counters without the use of proliferation is the most vital part of the strategy because of the way it can end the game without the use of proliferation.\n\t"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Additional sources of counters per turn are vital to creating late game opportunities "},{"insert":"to establish dominant board control. Nils, Discipline Enforcer is one of the strongest of the cards for the ability to hit one creature per player per round, and the additional safety net of the ghostly prison effect. Tolarian Contempt and Forgotten Ancient do not target creatures, and so are able to mass distribute counters through defenses like hexproof, ward, protection, or shroud. Tolarian Contempt also has an incredibly strong potential for ruining the tempo of some decks because it combines Disrupt Decorum with a pseudo-board wipe/top deck disadvantage; I do recommend being mindful of this fact and trying to play it as a game-ender. Court of Garenbrig is completely unique in the combination of goading, card draw via The Monarch, and acceleration it provides; even in games where an opponent can/threaten to take the monarch away I like it for the table interaction. Filigree Vector is a tutorable source of both counters and proliferation; even though this deck struggles to provide chump artifacts to activate Filigree Vector getting 1-2 rounds of Disrupt Decorum + a board pump will frequently be enough to end the game. A card I missed when building this deck is Sheltering Ancient, as the cumulative upkeep cost is untargeted interaction which can goad multiple creatures quickly; in addition to its impressive combat stats and low cost; I will be finding a place for it in the deck once I get my hands on one (I prefer not to order online when possible, and have several relatively well-stocked LGS)\n\n\tAlmost the entire structure of "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"control in this deck is built around Kros's second ability. "},{"insert":"As I mentioned earlier, the combination of tapping down opposing creatures while also goading them and granting them trample is an incredible amount of value. Additionally, this ability works on any kind of counter and does not target creatures meaning it is not hampered by defensive abilities [defensive abilities means Shroud, Protection (from), Hexproof, and Ward, as well as any printed text that adds a cost to targeting; "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"115.1d"},{"insert":",) and is a prime candidate for abusing proliferate; which also does not target and works on any kind of counter (specifically, ALL counters on the chosen object; proliferate no longer allows for only specific counters to be selected; "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"701.27a"},{"insert":"). It is worth noting that this means this deck over-values mass interaction, and the distinctions between targeted and untargeted interaction; which can be a frustrating experience for players expecting to be able to protect their stuff from your meddling. Each card that can proliferate or place a counter on a creature you don't control becomes a source of interaction while Kros is on the field, which means over 40 cards in this deck qualify as some kind of interaction piece. \"Control\" in this deck looks more like Overrun and Disrupt Decorum put together, meaning life totals can dwindle faster than you can establish any kind of lock on the board. "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"I find this tension to be very fun and have built this deck to have fewer safety tools for deescalating a board state;"},{"insert":" effects like Fog, Settle the Wreckage and Aetherize are disproportionately effective in forced combat decks (particularly when cast after combat damage has been assigned but before the end of combat.) I will freely admit that the deck would be safer and more politically influential running a few, if not several of these effects.\n\n\tIt is honestly a case of serendipity that my inspiration was comic book villains because I wanted to build the somewhat-villified archetype, superfriends in order to abuse proliferate. Frankly, I find proliferate to be a kind of broken mechanic; so since I'm going to feature it in this deck I made the decision to also completely avoid Poison counters at all (thus no compleated planeswalkers or Contaminant Grafter.) The next most busted thing to do with proliferation is ulting Planeswalkers, and Ichormoon Gauntlet is a great superfriends card. Finally, Goad is an incredibly strong method for protecting planeswalkers because it forces the player to be attacked directly. Even the few Planeswalkers that don't have game-threatening emblems can be granted one (in relative power) with Ichormoon Gauntlet. \n\t"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"There is an intentional decision to lean into some of the more frustrating cards as a method of pressuring players' decision making,"},{"insert":" threat analysis, and creative problem solving skills, but also their patience. Particularly in choices of planeswalkers like Oko, Thief of Crowns, Space Beleren, and the two Teferi cards; plus the threat of counter spells, blanket protection like Teferi's Protection and Heroic Intervention, and value engines like Rhystic Study and Smothering Tithe. It can be very fun for the table if you lean into the villainous vibe, but it does raise the mental tax for the entire table if you play this deck as-is. I am not a control player at heart, so I find it to be difficult and rewarding for me to pilot. If you don't like planeswalkers this deck would honestly benefit from having those 14 cards be more proliferate, counterspells, and board wipes; or you could run a blink sub-theme instead, or heavier control/stax; the world is your oyster go crazy.\n\n\tLike any control deck, "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"card draw and open mana are top priorities"},{"insert":". This deck tends to lean on heavier draw engines that establish themselves in concert with one or more other permanents, but has access to some of the strongest draw through Rhystic Study, Esper Sentinel, and Mystic Remora. It is also worth noting that any of those could possibly be circumvented in exchange for tempo; maybe my meta is strange but I often play a Rhystic Study and don't draw off of it. Many Planeswalkers have a little bit of card advantage built in, but are hard to quantify as a source of draw because of requirements associated or the cost of activation. For these reasons two of the best sources of card draw in the deck are Generous Patron and Verity Circle, both of which are capable of consistently overfilling your hand while advancing you control of the board. Danny Pink is a more aggressive version of this kind of draw engine since it triggers off your creatures, but the additional mana puts the card into steep competition with other threats while still being slower in most cases.\n\t\n\tOf all the keywords your opponents can have, Haste and Vigilance are the worst for your game plan. Vigilance is well accounted for with proliferate effects, but Haste can only really be defended against through Authority of the Consuls kind of effects. Add them if you like them or think they're necessary in your meta.\n\tUrza's Ruinous Blast made more sense in the deck that still had Tekuthal, Lae'zel, and the Oath of Teferi, Ajani, Gideon, and Nissa; I think it is still a good enough board wipe for a superfriends deck to run\n"}]}
