{"ops":[{"insert":"Started in 2005 as a Selesnya United deck, I've been adding to this old legacy deck for years and have finally swapped it to Commander format. Why Selesnyan Spring? Well, Spring as in the season of course (growth, birth, revitalising) but also a surprise (e.g. spring a trap), a source (e.g. water spring, mana spring), a populist uprising (e.g. Croatian Spring 1971, Arab Spring 2010) and a post-winter military push (e.g. a Spring Offensive). \n\nA lot of Selesnya Saproling decks I've seen are quite unfocussed, often trying for too much variety in mechanics and tokens. This deck has two key aims; 1) build up Saprolings and 2) gain life. Take all non-commander damage in the early game and focus on getting early Saps out, mid-game recover your life total and build up defences, then draw into your late game epic combos. \n\nThis deck has many ways to win. Sheer numbers of course, even with 20 big creatures out there's not much opponents can do about 50 saprolings swinging at them! But aside that there's also plays like Epic Struggle, Hair-Strung Koto milling, and Coat of Arms is just silly in this deck. There's a good amount of control too with tap-to-tap and tap-to-destroy abilities. \n\nSome particularly savage combos to call out; 1) Siege Striker (or any of the \"power/toughness = number of creatures\" creatures) with Pollenbright Wings, 2) Mycoloth with Doubling Season, 3) Sprout Swarm (Convoke + Buyback) with any of the \"twice that many tokens\" enchantments. And of course Commander Trostani's life gain on all of these!\n\nExample 1: Let's say it's Turn 6, Trostani came out Turn 4, you played Doubling Season Turn 5 and have say 5 Saprolings in play from the early game. Turn 6 you play Mycoloth (Devour 2), eats all 5 Saps. He gets 20 +1/+1 counters, and each upkeep puts 40 Saprolings in play! (+40 life gain per turn with Trostani).\n\nExample 2: How about Crusader of Odric Turn 3, Trostani on Turn 4, Parallel Lives Turn 5, and Pollenbright Wings Turn 6. With no other creatures out to begin with and attacking each turn; Turn 6 Crusader attacks for 1 damage, 2 Saps out +2 life gain. Turn 7 attacks for 3 damage, 6 new Saps out (8 total) + 6 life gain. Turn 8 attacks for 9 damage, 18 new Saps out (26 total) + 18 life gain. Turn 9 attacks for 27 damage, 54 new Saps out (80 total) +54 life gain, etc! If you have any Anthem effect giving Saps +1/+1, as Trostani's life gain is based on Toughness, all that life gain doubles.\n\nOne final note on colour distribution - it looks weighted towards Green but remember that Convoke is a common ability in this deck and things like Life and Limb and Mirari's Wake are also available.\n\nEnjoy!
