Description
{"ops":[{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"This a go-wide, Tolkien token deck with mostly LOTR cards!"},{"attributes":{"header":1},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nThis is a pretty straightforward plan, but what takes practice is the sequencing and incrementally advantageous interactions.\n\nThe basic strategy is to activate "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pippin, Warden of Isengard"}},{"insert":" which triggers "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Merry, Warden of Isengard"}},{"insert":". Then after building a board and making four foods, you activate Pippin's second ability and swing in. Unfortunately, four 4/4s with lifelink is not enough to close out most games.\n\nThe way this deck accelerates the basic strategy is by triggering Merry on other players' turns to build a wider board, there are a few ways to do this reliably. Casting artifacts or having creatures ETB with them ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gilded Goose"}},{"insert":") are the most common ways to save Pippin’s activation for another player’s turn. Effects like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Tireless Provisioner"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sam, Loyal Attendant"}},{"insert":" can only happen on your turn so they work the same way. There are untappers like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Magewright's Stone"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sting, the Glinting Dagger"}},{"insert":" which can let you activate Pippin multiple times per rotation. Additionally, other permanents activate to create artifact tokens like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gilded Goose"}},{"insert":"(MVP).\n\nThe second way the deck accelerates is by having token bombs like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Farmer Cotton"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit"}},{"insert":" which make tons of creatures to go-wide with. The explosiveness is compounded by Pippin giving creatures haste when pumping them.\n\nThe biggest issue with this go-wide strategy is that the creatures have only 3-4 ways to gain trample-evasion. Instead of subbing out powerful game pieces for trample enablers, the deck uses uneven board wipes to create better attack opportunities. This works doubly if you are behind and need to slow your opponents down, two birds with one stone.\n\nEven though the go-wide strategy is quite strong, usually the damage from a first swing out is not enough to kill three competent decks. The lifegain from the soldiers (or food in a pinch) should be enough to survive crackback, especially if you board wiped before swinging out. If your engine is dismantled the deck can usually rebuild while other players disadvantage each other. In that situation lay low and don’t draw the ire of your opponents, build up soldiers and hold finishers in your hand until you can follow through. You can also finish off stragglers with ping effects like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mirkwood Bats"}},{"insert":".\n\nAlthough the deck is inherently go-wide, there are a few big beaters, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Banquet Guests"}},{"insert":" , "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rapacious Guest"}},{"insert":" , and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Feasting Hobbit"}},{"insert":" , but they are just a backup if you get wiped but keep your foods or you need a little extra to push through parity.\n\nNote:"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"I'm trying to get this deck to 90 LOTR cards and 10 exceptions, maybe even less. Unfortunately, a lot of the good reprints and/or nickname cards are like $20+, so I am running like 15 non-LOTR right now. But if you have the money for those changes and want to, go nuts! I have most if not all of the viable LOTR switches in the maybeboard. I will be updating the deck as I get them, but don't hold your breath, its gonna be a while.\n"}]}
