{"ops":[{"insert":"Hi,\n\nGilanra/Glacian is a control/go-tall CPDH deck, looking to survive the early game to overwhelm in the late game. The main selling point is the early-accessible, reliable draw power (via Gilanra) with increasing depth of card selection as the game progresses (via Glacian).\n\nStrengths:\n1) Consistency. The deck achieves its aims in most games, with few mulligans needed.\n\n2) Simplicity. Aside from managing mana and threat assessment, the small number of actions taken per turn cycle means you can focus on what your opponents are doing.\n\n3) Robustness. The deck is difficult to lock out of the game, even in lieu of either commander, as the high density of threats makes a threatening board presence likely.\n\n4) Strong interaction tools. Blue has arguably the best 1 mana interaction spells in the format, making it easy to consistently disrupt opponents while investing in your board.\n\n\nWeaknesses:\n1) Slow. In a vacuum, the deck wins around turn 10 at the earliest. Multiple win attempts are likely before you can close.\n\n2) Some tough matchups. Most of the interaction is bounce, which is broadly adequate but ineffective into specific archetypes and commanders - e.g. flicker combo. Black control decks spamming edicts can hurt your ability to get off the ground. Go wide decks make combat challenging.\n\n3) Bad draws are possible. It's rare, but the deck can get stuck at 5 mana, fail to find threats, or see no interaction; all of which significantly hurt likelihood of winning.\n\n4) Combat as the only win condition. Can be frustrated by fog-heavy decks or toolbox decks running Spore Frog, Stonehorn Dignitary, etc.\n\n\nCore gameplan:\nThe ideal play pattern is:\nT1: land\nT2: land and mana source (end 3 mana)\nT3: land, mana source + gilanra (end 6 mana)\nT4: land, Glacian, 1 mana for interaction.\nT5 onwards: a single big creature a turn, holding up interaction if possible, and using Glacian to acquire another card before your next turn.\n\nIn practice, it's likely there will be compromises. Missed land/mana source meaning turn 5 Glacian; whiffs on interaction off the top of the library; necessity of skipping a big creature to hold up additional interaction; etc. Most of the time, though, you'll arrive at turn 8 with at least 3 threats and at least three pieces of interaction in hand/resolved.\n\nVia big creature damage alone, from turn 6 onwards, with no opponent blockers/removal and an average creature power of roughly 6, you'll reach 90 damage dealt by close of turn 10. Of course, this never happens; but games are never without incidental damage, either, even in the most insular of combo pods. You can expect to be presenting lethal damage by turn 11 at the latest; not at all impressive, but reliable.\n\nStrategy considerations:\n1) Use interaction sparingly. The common rule of thumb amongst cPDH players is 'interact only when you're about to lose'. Despite your high interaction count, this premise is important for GilGla. The multiple sources of lifegain, big blockers, and 1 mana bounce, make you unusually resilient to opponent board development. In most cases, you should out-value them by the later turns; opponents presenting threats eases the pressure on you.\n\n2) Get comfortable cutting deals. The more breathing room, the better. Consider offering to hold interaction while others invest; not attacking in exchange for board investment of your own; even using bounce spells to give an opponent back a useful ETB (hello Abdel!). Be very clear about the terms of your arrangement, and take exceptional care to follow those terms to the letter. Your aim is to be seen as an asset.\n\n3) Outside political agreements, you dont need to attack much. By turn 9, you can throw 18 damage with evasion at a player, distributed between three creatures. It's generally better to keep people guessing on your read of the table. \n\n\nToughest matchups:\n1) Gut / Leader. \nGut is problematic for a few reasons:\nA) You dont have access to board wipes, and the current build runs no fogs.\nB) The skeletons are each threatening and your interaction removes one at a time, with gut essentially replacing it for free.\nC) Gut is significantly (3 to 4 turns) faster than you, and there's little you can do if she targets you early.\n\nThis is one of the few instances where early, proactive removal is worth considering. Be clear that you will remove Gut and/or Skeletons early if they look to kill you first. They can still get you, but it significantly hurts their odds of winning, which can be enough to make them reconsider.\n\n2) Third Path Iconoclast\nTPI is problematic because:\nA] It goes very wide, very quickly, creating a combat advantage on offence/defence.\nB) It is largely indifferent to your interaction attempts. This is one of the few reasons to consider running Fade Away.\nC) It is highly explosive in both pinger and anthem builds, making threat assessment hard.\nD) It's not shy about countering your threats to extract value.\n\nTPI's big weaknesses are it's large reliance on the commander, and inability to gain life. Similar to Gut, you can threaten trades that may be worse for you, but painful enough to make TPI reconsider. Making TPI an ally is often the right move, as you often benefit from each other's actions and can lock opponents out of the game. Have a clear idea of when that deal should end.\n\nTatyova:\nDespite being slightly slower to pop off than Gretchen or Weavers, Taty's lifegain makes her a slightly harder opponent. Like her simic analogues, she can battle through multiple pieces of interaction before you finish her. Attacking early is essential here; there simply isnt time to be coy about it. Ask your opponents for breathing room while you race her.\n\n\nTailoring the decklist to you:\n\nThreat package:\nThere are are least three distinct approaches here.\n1) Cycling creatures to avoid getting stuck at <6 mana.\n2) Toolbox creatures that interact, gain life, have Flash, etc.\n3) High stats per mana spent, plus evasion keywords / mass enablers.\n\nMy experience suggests 1) is most important, with a mercifully small compromise made on 3); creatures like Timberland Ancient and Slavering Branchsnapper are adequately statted while getting you out the hole. Lifegain is the most advantageous trait, buying you crucial time in midrange and aggro matchups. ETB bounce creatures are mediocre at first, but are close enough to 'interaction' that they can take that deck slot to maintain draw power. Ultimately there are no right/wrong answers here; consider more ramp for fewer cyclers, and blanket evasion for weaker hitters.\n\nRamp package:\nA few considerations:\n1) Colour fixing\n2) Artifact vs high quality alternatives\n3) The cost of 'enters tapped'\nMy current perspective is that any rock that can be used the turn it enters should at least be strongly considered. Cards like Sphere of the Suns and Pentad Prism are just beyond the pale. Rocks that enter tapped are justifiable if they fix. Ramp usable on the turn its played enables the turn 3 gilanra+ramp play; thus, cards like Nature's Lore outvalue otherwise fantastic utility dorks like Heart Warden and Wose Pathfinder. However, the jump in potency at 2 mana, and tooling to deal with specific decks, can prompt some exceptions. Echoing Truth hurts TPI, Abdel, and Gut significantly. Ram Through often pushes an opponent into negative life. Dispersal shield is an easier to cast counterspell almost every time. Ultimately there's a lot of flexibility to adjust to the metagame here. Midrange and aggro metas necessitate removal; combo metas might justify more counterspells. Fogs, while not technically interaction, hugely ease the Gut and TPI matchups.\nSome pet cards here:\n- Cloak of Invisibility is evasion for a threat in the late game; it also slows Gut and Arabella down without the pressure of Witness Protection.\n- Reality Ripple is soft protection and decent one-turn interaction that works better into flicker combo than bounce.\n- You Come to a River, and Veil of Secrecy, are completely playable evasion/interaction tools.\n\n-----------‐---\n\nClosing thoughts:\nThis deck is the final iteration of a series of Gilanra decks I worked on, and I'm very proud of it. You'll get some flack for playing a slower deck; for being passive; for not having a more flamboyant win condition.
