You may include lands to cast your commander, but spells and abilities must not require the color you're omitting. For example, if you choose to build an Izzet deck with Eshki Dragonclaw as your commander, you cannot include any cards that require green mana to cast or use, but you can include green lands to cast Eshki. As always, decks will be judged on creativity and originality."},{"insert":"\n\nThis contest prompt is inspired by the growing list of commanders that don't require all of their colors to be cast. Commanders like Alesha, Who Smiles at Death, Keruga, the Macrosage, and Jinnie Fay, Jetmir's Second can all helm decks that leave out one color in their identity. Two color decks often have cheaper mana bases, or you might prefer how a deck with fewer colors plays. Some of these commanders also naturally push you to prioritize one color over the others. An Alesha deck with no other red cards can more easily optimize it's mana base to pay for her activated ability. On the other hand, you can build Simic Yasova Dragonclaw to play the rare theft deck without red.\n\nOf course, you can choose any commander for this challenge, not just ones that abridge their own mana costs. This is a great opportunity to push strategies outside of their normal colors while having support from a strong commander. Nethroi, Apex of Death can lead a Selesnya reanimator deck, or a Golgari aggro deck that cheats its smaller attackers into play en masse. Raffine, Scheming Seer could make for an interesting Orzhov or even mono black tempo deck.\n\nPerhaps the easiest route to take is to choose a commander that doesn't need to be cast at all. You can easily build a deck of any color with The Ur-Dragon, and Oloro, Ageless Ascetic has been helming mono white lifegain decks for almost as long as Commander's been around. These commanders tend to be more specific to a creature type or theme, however, so building a creative deck that stands out will be more difficult.\n\nHow To Participate"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on Archidekt that satisfies the prompt."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Strictly one deck submitted per user."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nReply to the Archidekt newspost, or submission post on the Archidekt Discord with a link to your deck before "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"9:00 pm EST (UTC -5, currently)"},{"insert":" on "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Wednesday, April 9, 2025"},{"insert":" (do not submit the same deck in multiple places).\n\nOnly one submission per user! No one? Oh... well it's still not all that common, so here's my submission for this month's contest: a Boros-only sacrifice-and-burn deck that tries to win the game the old fashioned way - by dropping everybody else's life total to zero.\n\nThis deck makes use of Neriv’s damage-doubling ability, including a few more doublers to make each hit deal up to 32 times damage (or kinda 64x, if the starting damage was 1), though all you need are a couple to start becoming a threat. Begin by playing a mana rock and a few cheap utility creatures while you build a board. Since Neriv’s ability cares about creatures that entered this turn, we’re going to try to get a haste enabler on board, plus one or two of the following pieces: damage doubler, token maker, draw engine, and sacrifice outlet. Then bring in Neriv and either swing in with a bunch of little guys, or start burning your opponents with direct damage in large chunks.\n\nSpeaking of haste, that’s one way we can take advantage of Neriv’s ability, but not the only way. Creatures dealing direct damage counts, so a turn consisting of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Guttersnipe"}},{"insert":" into a string of removal spells, protected by "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Grand Abolisher"}},{"insert":" if needed, could end the game on the spot. As could any combination of our token generators and a card like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Warstorm Surge"}},{"insert":", which is the secret weapon of this deck. Its wording is such that, when it causes damage to be dealt, it has the creature deal the damage. So with it on the board, any creature, token or non, will deal damage equal to its power to any target. Or equal to twice its power. Or four times. Or... you see where this is going. Suddenly, our "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wizened Mentor"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Harsh Mentor"}},{"insert":" combine to become a massive, game-ending threat.\n\nOf course, you can also get creatures to enter the battlefield by killing them! "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"That doesn’t make sense"},{"insert":", you say? Well, get yourself a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Luminous Broodmoth"}},{"insert":" and a haste enabler and suddenly each time you sacrifice a nontoken creature (without flying, that is), it comes back with a flying counter on it immediately, ready to attack with added evasion if it’s your first main phase.\n\nIf that goesn't work, there's always "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Jolly Balloon Man"}},{"insert":", who can make a token copy of almost all of our creatures, which are almost all non-legendary. These tokens are, of course, newly-entered creatures, thus applying Neriv's effect to them as well.\n\nAnd don’t forget that, while not all our doublers double damage dealt to other creatures, Neriv does, so if a spell or creature lets you apply your damage to a creature, you can use it to take out some big threats if needed as well.\n\nI personally don’t love playing infinite combos, but I’m fairly new to this, so there may be some in here. That said, this deck tries to build up to an inevitable win, adding pieces that each add one element of threat that can get out of hand when combined with a couple others. No two pieces will win you the game on the spot, but get a few of them on the board together and you’ll become the threat pretty quickly.\n\nDamage Doublers:\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Neriv, Heart of the Storm"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fiendish Duo"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gratuitous Violence"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Solphim, Mayhem Dominus"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Twinflame Tyrant"}},{"insert":" \nHonorable Mention - "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rem Karolus, Stalwart Slayer"}},{"insert":" (who has a replacement effect for x+1 damage, which can be added at the start of consecutive doublings for best effect)\n\nHaste Enablers:\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Anger"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Tuktuk Rubblefort"}},{"insert":" \n\nToken Makers:\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bonehoard Dracosaur"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dollmaker's Shop // Porcelain Gallery"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hangarback Walker"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Overlord of the Mistmoors"}},{"insert":"\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Song of Totentanz"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Tempt with Bunnies"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Jolly Balloon Man"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wizened Mentor"}},{"insert":" \n\nSacrifice Outlets:\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goblin Bombardment"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scorched Rusalka"}},{"insert":" \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thermopod"}},{"insert":" \n\nOther Key Cards:\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Arabella, Abandoned Doll"}},{"insert":" - can swing in for an absurd amount with her attack trigger, which would also double for each of our doublers in play. Giver her lifelink with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Basilisk Collar"}},{"insert":" and you gain that much on top of everything else.\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldrazi Displacer"}},{"insert":" - can make use of late-game mana to flicker our creatures one at a time, making them count as having entered ā€œthis turnā€ again for Neriv’s ability.\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Havoc Jester"}},{"insert":" - adds burn for each creature sacrificed, which with a couple other pieces can give us a long chain of triggers that deals a massive amount of damage for us to distribute as we see fit.\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Slip On the Ring"}},{"insert":" - only single use, as an instant, but a useful tool to re-apply Neriv’s ability to a creature while also providing a bit of evasion (in the first level of the Ring temptation) and a protection spell if Neriv (or Guttersnipe) is threatened.\n\nWhile it may seem strange to take one of Tarkir: Dragonstorm’s new clan leader Spirit Dragons and make it the commander of a Boros token sacrifice deck, I thought this would make for a fun concept, and one I’ve been wanting to play around with for a while. I hope you enjoy!\n\n"}]}
