This month we're delving into Magic's past and pulling inspiration from competitive 60 card decks, specifically their names. If you're not familar, Magic decks of the past have had creative names that don't describe how the deck works. This month, your task will be to reinterpret those names and create a Commander deck to match. More details below.\n\nWhat’s The Contest All About?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWorking within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. However, Rather than adapting the strategy of the deck, develop a creative interpretation based only on the deck's name. For example, Tin Fins sounds like a deck built around sea creatures and artifacts. That could be copying Inkwell Leviathan, or suiting merfolk up with as many equipment as possible. Four Horsemen might include only four creatures, each riding a horse, or be a deck built around a four card combo.\n\nSome names are harder to interpret. You might have an idea of what a Fruity Pebbles deck would do, but what about Raisin Bran? Or Nic Fit? The color of Raisin Bran might remind you of the old artifact border, while raisins might represent the desiccated figures of Zombies.\n\nFor Nic Fit you might focus on the apparent typo, and include cards like Zaffai, Thunder Conductor which have spelling mistakes in their text.\n\nOf course, you can pick any deck from the long history of Magic tournaments. Keep in mind, however, that the more strange and cryptic the deck name the more opportunity you have for creative interpretation.\n\nThat shouldn't stop you from exploring an idea for UR Delver or Domain Overlords, but be careful you don't simply recreate that strategy in Commander.\n\n\nHow To Participate"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on Archidekt that satisfies the prompt."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Strictly one deck submitted per user."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n\nReply to the Archidekt newspost, or submission post on the Archidekt Discord with a link to your deck before "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"9:00 pm EST"},{"insert":" (UTC -4, currently) on "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Wednesday, May 14, 2025"},{"insert":" (do not submit the same deck in multiple places).\n\nOnly one submission per user! Searching \"art:horse\" also helped a lot.\n\nThe \"Four Horsemen\" are Sun Quan, Lord of Wu (the commander); Sun Ce, Young Conqueror; Lu Xun, Scholar General; and Lu Meng, Wu General.\n\nThey come along with a bunch of other (lesser) horsemen, horse-drawn chariots, and a bunch of horses (including some pegasi, hippocamps, and unicorns). They also fly banners as they ride, like any good knight. Finally, there Bill Ferny is following them as they ride into battle, waiting for his chance to nab a horse or two to sell.\n\nAnd if you look closely enough, apart from 3 of the 4 banners, every single card in the deck has a horse in the art! I could have made it all 100 by cutting the banners and adding more lands, but that feels like cheating.\n"}]}

The deck also features a discard engine in the form of Tergrid-Infernal Kirin or Magus of the Jar to steal you opponents' cards. \n\nFor some reason this is a bracket 3 deck. Intended to play at bracket 2, this deck tries to entice your opponents with goodies and then makes them pay for it! Paying you, specifically, as your commander benefits for each creature that dies during your turn! Once you've amassed a wealth of treasures, simply leverage them into a game win with one of several treasure win-cons. The deck favors flavor over function, so a few of the obvious picks for this deck strategy are missing, but that makes it an easy upgrade to bracket 3 if that's the vibe you want to go for. It even has Fury in it, since it does kind of work in our deck strategy!\n"}]}

Today, I'm going to ignore all of that and provide a completely different and literal interpretation for the name \"Junk Reanimator\". {"ops":[{"insert":"Zero Effect - Fog\nhttps://archidekt.com/decks/12997917/zero_effectdefending_fog\n\n\nNothing is more frustrating than having your plan have no effect. Although a lot of decks win with indirect damage most still use attacking as the main form of winning. Often with some grand gesture like Craterhoof Behemoth. A move where tiny little guys become big or a big guy becomes unstoppable. This deck understands that nothing would be more frustrating that having that gesture, that most satisfying act of aggression come to naught. Even small sniggering hits are annoying and should be stopped. So this deck obsessed and discovered a word. One beautiful word\n\nFog\n\nThis deck isn't an attacking deck. It does attack but mostly it defends. Nearly all the creatures have defender and most of those that don't either turn off defender or are a fog effect themselves. There are even spells that will defend against board wipes; Eerie interference, Gideon's Sacrifice, and Safe Passage.\n\nThe goal is to build a strong defensive board and to let your opponents fight each other. Hitting your defender's really doesn't do anything. Or because of that 0 power they might forget that with your commander or certain other creatures out that 0 mean nothing. Their plan doesn't advance like it should. If they do attack you there are several fogs that just let it pass. each defender brings in new cards and new potential.  \n\nI could have put a bunch of counter spells and made it so they couldn't do anything but I believe a \"few\" fogs make you seem less threatening, less like an opponent who is going to have any effect on the game. I does seem a bit hypocritical to have Craterhoof and Moonshaker but oops.\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"attributes":{"background":"transparent","color":"#000000"},"insert":"Hey all, this is my take on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse prompt and my first flavor deck! I tried fitting as many relevant references to the actual story of the four horsemen as possible while still maintaining some semblance of a playable deck, as well as fitting in some ties to the interpretation of the horseman as a representation of the fall of Rome and some of the interesting nuances involving it. As a whole the deck looks to be making tokens, inciting conflict, and then clearing the board, hopefully benefitting from all the destruction with some of the available death payoffs. Feel free to comment if you think something is out of place or represented poorly so that I can improve it after the contest, (I'm assuming you're not allowed to edit submitted decks?) and I hope you enjoy it!"},{"insert":"\n\n"},{"attributes":{"background":"transparent","color":"#1155cc","link":"https://archidekt.com/decks/12985406/and_the_apocalypse_that_follows"},"insert":"https://archidekt.com/decks/12985406/and_the_apocalypse_that_follows"},{"attributes":{"background":"transparent","color":"#000000"},"insert":" "},{"insert":"\n\n"}]}
