This month we're delving into Magic's past and pulling inspiration from competitive 60 card decks, specifically their names. If you're not familar, Magic decks of the past have had creative names that don't describe how the deck works. This month, your task will be to reinterpret those names and create a Commander deck to match. More details below.\n\nWhat’s The Contest All About?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWorking within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. However, Rather than adapting the strategy of the deck, develop a creative interpretation based only on the deck's name. Including an explanation of your thought process in the deck description will help your submission stand out."},{"insert":"\n\n"},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"Tin Fins, Zoo, Maverick, The Rock, MUD, Deadguy Ale, Fruity Pebbles, Four Horsemen, Cephalid Breakfast, Full English Breakfast, Nic Fit, Raisin Bran, Quick n' Toast, The Mighty Quinn, The Truffle Shuffle, Ice Station Zebra, Zero Effect, Spring Tide, Iggy Pop"},{"insert":"\n\nThis month's prompt is about interpreting a deck name in a creative way, without consideration for the cards in the actual deck. For example, Tin Fins sounds like a deck built around sea creatures and artifacts. That could be copying Inkwell Leviathan, or suiting merfolk up with as many equipment as possible. Four Horsemen might include only four creatures, each riding a horse, or be a deck built around a four card combo.\n\nSome names are harder to interpret. You might have an idea of what a Fruity Pebbles deck would do, but what about Raisin Bran? Or Nic Fit? The color of Raisin Bran might remind you of the old artifact border, while raisins might represent the desiccated figures of Zombies.\n\nFor Nic Fit you might focus on the apparent typo, and include cards like Zaffai, Thunder Conductor which have spelling mistakes in their text.\n\nOf course, you can pick any deck from the long history of Magic tournaments. Keep in mind, however, that the more strange and cryptic the deck name the more opportunity you have for creative interpretation.\n\nThat shouldn't stop you from exploring an idea for UR Delver or Domain Overlords, but be careful you don't simply recreate that strategy in Commander.\n\n\nHow To Participate"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on Archidekt that satisfies the prompt."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Strictly one deck submitted per user."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n\nReply to the Archidekt newspost, or submission post on the Archidekt Discord with a link to your deck before "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"9:00 pm EST"},{"insert":" (UTC -4, currently) on "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Wednesday, May 14, 2025"},{"insert":" (do not submit the same deck in multiple places).\n\nOnly one submission per user! {"ops":[{"insert":"When I first read the words \"Zero Effect,\" I was flummoxed on how one was meant to make an effect come from nothing (at least I think that's what it's talking about, I haven't looked it up). After some soul searching, I have determined that the only logical conclusion that one can come to from the words \"Zero Effect\" is that the player is meant to reach Zero life as fast as possible and then exchange life with other players so they may also experience the joys of having Zero life. \nTo do this in my "},{"attributes":{"link":"https://archidekt.com/decks/13086153/zero_effect"},"insert":"Zero Effect"},{"insert":" deck, I built around Teval, Arbiter of Virtue's self-drain ability. Most of the deck is devoted to cards that help me dig for Platinum Angel/Pact Weapon so I don't die while at Zero and later Repay in Kind so I can kill the rest of the table as well as a lot of recursion and counterspells to ensure I hold onto these integral game pieces. \nHowever, putting all my faith in the latter win con is risky, so I have included a few backup plans. Firstly is Omniscience and Ancient Cellarspawn, who can enable a burn stratagem by playing Zero mana for my spells. Then there's a handful of Fogs to ensure I don't get killed by my opponents before I get Plantinum Angel. Lastly is Jace, Wielder of Mysteries, who is mainly there just in case I end up with Zero cards in my deck due to my hubris-driven pursuit of the number Zero.\nThe result is about as close as I think one can get to a Bracket 2 combo deck, which was nice to accidentally produce. Hope you enjoy.\n\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"\"Truffle Shuffle\"\nDecklist: https://archidekt.com/decks/13084038/truffle_shuffle\nSo this deck takes inspiration from the name \"Truffle Shuffle\" in a couple of ways.\nFirst off green black, can you think of a more mushroomy color combination?\nThe bit inspiration was food. I adore mushrooms/truffles.\nSo we built a deck around turning everything into food (preferably we use food tokens with mushrooms on them)\nNot only are we using the commander Ygra, Eater of All to turn everyones creatures into food (read mushrooms)\nWe are also forcing all players to constantly sacrifice, sending their board into the grave so that the cycle of life may continue, as the mushrooms grow. There is even recursion built in so we can witness that life sprout from our own graveyard or opponents.\n\nSo we've got the right colors, shufflinf mushrooms into everyones field, sending things to the grave to become mushrooms, that we can then harvest to bring them back. As well as a few different trufflesnouts to help us find our way.\n"}]}
