This month we're delving into Magic's past and pulling inspiration from competitive 60 card decks, specifically their names. If you're not familar, Magic decks of the past have had creative names that don't describe how the deck works. This month, your task will be to reinterpret those names and create a Commander deck to match. More details below.\n\nWhat’s The Contest All About?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWorking within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. Three chosen finalists will be awarded store credit to cardsphere.com.\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"For May's deckbuilding contest, build a Commander-legal deck based on the name of a classic sixty card deck. However, Rather than adapting the strategy of the deck, develop a creative interpretation based only on the deck's name. A non-exhaustive list of wacky deck names is included here, but you can choose any deck from competitive sixty card formats. Including an explanation of your thought process in the deck description will help your submission stand out."},{"insert":"\n\n"},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"Tin Fins, Zoo, Maverick, The Rock, MUD, Deadguy Ale, Fruity Pebbles, Four Horsemen, Cephalid Breakfast, Full English Breakfast, Nic Fit, Raisin Bran, Quick n' Toast, The Mighty Quinn, The Truffle Shuffle, Ice Station Zebra, Zero Effect, Spring Tide, Iggy Pop"},{"insert":"\n\nThis month's prompt is about interpreting a deck name in a creative way, without consideration for the cards in the actual deck. For example, Tin Fins sounds like a deck built around sea creatures and artifacts. That could be copying Inkwell Leviathan, or suiting merfolk up with as many equipment as possible. Four Horsemen might include only four creatures, each riding a horse, or be a deck built around a four card combo.\n\nSome names are harder to interpret. You might have an idea of what a Fruity Pebbles deck would do, but what about Raisin Bran? Or Nic Fit? The color of Raisin Bran might remind you of the old artifact border, while raisins might represent the desiccated figures of Zombies.\n\nFor Nic Fit you might focus on the apparent typo, and include cards like Zaffai, Thunder Conductor which have spelling mistakes in their text.\n\nOf course, you can pick any deck from the long history of Magic tournaments. Keep in mind, however, that the more strange and cryptic the deck name the more opportunity you have for creative interpretation.\n\nThat shouldn't stop you from exploring an idea for UR Delver or Domain Overlords, but be careful you don't simply recreate that strategy in Commander.\n\n\nHow To Participate"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on Archidekt that satisfies the prompt."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Strictly one deck submitted per user."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n\nReply to the Archidekt newspost, or submission post on the Archidekt Discord with a link to your deck before "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"9:00 pm EST"},{"insert":" (UTC -4, currently) on "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Wednesday, May 14, 2025"},{"insert":" (do not submit the same deck in multiple places).\n\nOnly one submission per user! I chose Cromat since if you plop him down at the start of a game, not many people are going to care. Cromat doesn't really do anything on his own, and he can be switched out for any other 5c Commander or Partners that use all 5 colors.\n\nWhile I've broken down the combos into categories, there are, of course, some cross breeding. \n\nWe've got combos for +1/+1 counters, Card Drawing using Niv-MIzzet, Exquisite Blood combos, Infinite Turns, Infinite Mana and Infinite Tokens.\n\nAre we creating new ground with these combos? Not at all. Most are boring & bog standard & I wanted to keep most combos to 2 or 3 cards per combo. I've also decided to only include combos that could conceivably win without interacting too much with the opponent, so as annoying as Mindslaver combos are, I've decided to leave it out.\n\nBut how exactly do we win? Especially if the thought is a multi-person pod?\n\nSome combos will also deal damage to your opponents, either all or some. But since they go infinite, it's basically the same.\n\nWith infinite tokens, you swing to win.\n\nBut I also have soft spot for 'I Win' type of cards, which are of course annoying. And most play well with various combos like Test of Endurance/Feldinar Sovereign for life gain, or Epic Struggle for Creatures, Helix Pinnacle for mana. These play well with our infinite turn combos.\n\nFor some backup to go along the actual 'I Win' cards, I've also included the classic Fireball and Impact Tremors for Mana or Token combos.\n\nAs much as I wanted to just include combos + land, I figured having a least a little bit of utility & draw would help.\n\nMass Hysteria/Fervor/Rising of the day could net us our combos in a single turn as most require tapping creatures.\n\nWe've also included a set of tutors & various card draw effects.\n\nCrawlspace & Propaganda help limit creature aggro strategies. Mycosynth Lattice + Darksteel Forge make everything you have indestructable.\n"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"}]}

In a classic precon style there are three possible commanders within the decklist, feel free to assign the callsigns of Maverick, Iceman and Goose to them as you please. With your army of jets, and pilots to crew them you'll see the benefits of taking to flight every turn with a few combat damage effects to draw cards. \n\nTake your opponents breath away and grab the game by the Great Balls of Fire.\n"}]}

Checked.\n\nAnd from here on out, I've looked at cards that were boats ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Indomitable"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Consulate Dreadnought"}},{"insert":"), included crew members in art ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spell Swindle"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chart a Course"}},{"insert":"), were crew members of sorts ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Oswald Fiddlebender"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Azure Fleet Admiral"}},{"insert":"), the equipment needed on boat ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Expedition Map"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thaumatic Compass // Spires of Orazca"}},{"insert":") or were all about the sea-shanty life ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Consuming Tide"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Coastal Piracy"}},{"insert":").\nThere are some interesting inclusions, that aren't totally about boat and crew, but they are to make it work, and are somewhat on theme still ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spreading Seas"}},{"insert":" to make landhome boats - "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Steam Frigate"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Armored Galleon"}},{"insert":" - work, but still being on theme with seas that the boat sails; "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Waterlogged Hulk // Watertight Gondola"}},{"insert":" to enable some graveyard synergies, while being a \"ruin\" of boat etc.).\nI've decided to not focus on pirates to have pirate synergies like "},{"attributes":{"strike":true},"insert":{"card-link":"Admiral Beckett Brass"}},{"insert":", but there are some pirates or piracy themed cards included, mainly for its name and/or art (deadeye crew, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pirate's Prize"}},{"insert":", mentioned "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Coastal Piracy"}},{"insert":" or even THE "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pirate Ship"}},{"insert":").\nFor the lands, I've decided to make up basics only from islands (color pips/flavor), but to include dual lands with some bodies of water, excluding some prevalent choices, but having them be swapped for some interesting lands ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Saprazzan Cove"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Coral Atoll"}},{"insert":").\n\nSince the deck is pretty on budget, I've decided to exclude two interesting cards, that are way too more expensive than the rest, but are worthy to be mentioned and are included in the maybeboard: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pirated Copy"}},{"insert":" (expensive for being good) and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Merchant Ship"}},{"insert":" (being from AN).\nI'd like to mention that this deck is heavily focused on theme, but I've still tried to make it work, and while it might be bad, I would still include it in bracket 2.\n\nHope you've enjoyed it, and feel free to comment on it :)\n"}]}
