This month we're delving into Magic's past and pulling inspiration from competitive 60 card decks, specifically their names. This month, your task will be to reinterpret those names and create a Commander deck to match. More details below.\n\nWhat’s The Contest All About?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWorking within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. However, Rather than adapting the strategy of the deck, develop a creative interpretation based only on the deck's name. For example, Tin Fins sounds like a deck built around sea creatures and artifacts. That could be copying Inkwell Leviathan, or suiting merfolk up with as many equipment as possible. Four Horsemen might include only four creatures, each riding a horse, or be a deck built around a four card combo.\n\nSome names are harder to interpret. You might have an idea of what a Fruity Pebbles deck would do, but what about Raisin Bran? Or Nic Fit? The color of Raisin Bran might remind you of the old artifact border, while raisins might represent the desiccated figures of Zombies.\n\nFor Nic Fit you might focus on the apparent typo, and include cards like Zaffai, Thunder Conductor which have spelling mistakes in their text.\n\nOf course, you can pick any deck from the long history of Magic tournaments. Keep in mind, however, that the more strange and cryptic the deck name the more opportunity you have for creative interpretation.\n\nThat shouldn't stop you from exploring an idea for UR Delver or Domain Overlords, but be careful you don't simply recreate that strategy in Commander.\n\n\nHow To Participate"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Brew an EDH/Commander legal deck on Archidekt that satisfies the prompt."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Any unreleased cards spoiled during the contest’s duration are allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Silver-bordered and acorn cards, while cool, are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Digital-only cards (such as those designed for the Alchemy format on Arena) are not allowed."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"   Strictly one deck submitted per user."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\n\nReply to the Archidekt newspost, or submission post on the Archidekt Discord with a link to your deck before "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"9:00 pm EST"},{"insert":" (UTC -4, currently) on "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Wednesday, May 14, 2025"},{"insert":" (do not submit the same deck in multiple places).\n\nOnly one submission per user! Let's all pretend we are playing the Digimon TCG and stack as many cards as possible on top of each other! Lead by the queen of placing multiple cards under herself, Lagrella, this deck plays just about every type of card that creates stacks of cards. Be it the classic Fact or Fiction style effects, other exile effects similar to Lagrella, or the small stacks that Hideaway cards create, we are building stacks, on stacks, on stacks. And that's not even counting the mechanic built around stacking creatures, mutate! Go tall with mutate, then exile your mutated creature with Lagrella to create an even bigger stack! (Did you know that exiling a mutate stack with an effect that returns it to the field returns each creature to the field individually? That's a lot of extra +1/+1 counters!) While the deck might be low on protection, two more stacking cards, Split the Spoils and Death or Glory, help you recover your resources after a board clear, or maybe just after you've loaded up your graveyard with cards like Fact or Fiction.\n\nThis deck may not be Staxing the opponent in the traditional sense, but you'll still be \"Staxing\" your opponents out of the game. \n \n"}]}

I took the classic deck name “Fruity Pebbles” and tried to think of how I could make it even fruitier. And then it dawned on me: LGBTQ+\n\nI wanted to challenge myself to include every LGBT+ character I could find, while also staying within the confines of a limited commander color. \n\nI chose Yuma, Proud Protector. I learned that Yuma is actually a trans man, which I probably would never have known if I didn’t do some research for this little deck building challenge. Choosing Yuma also provided the groundwork for what my commander color restrictions would be: Naya (RGW).\n\nTurns out, Naya is a pretty queer color (lucky for me). I got to include Chandra, who is canonically pansexual.  Nissa, who (as far as I can tell through a little research) is queer. Karn, Alharu and Niko who identify as nonbinary. Alesha and (of course) Yuma, who are trans. And our favorite partners, Halana and Alena.\n\nI also tried to include some queer artists in things like the lands. Some of the lands and artifacts are just rainbow references, because why not. There’s some references to queer culture like Dream-Thief’s Bandana. And in some places I made sure to include a little self deprecating humor, like the Boots of Speed and Swiftfoot Boots (we walk fast, ok?)\n\nThis deck list might not be perfect and I might be missing some obvious ones, but please go easy on me. I’m fairly new to Magic the Gathering and Commander, and this is my first time doing the monthly deck building challenge. I know this kind of deck and idea might not be for everyone, but I wanted to do something that I know some Magic/ Commander fans would really appreciate. It was also fun to get to do a little deep dive into Magic lore and characters. I learned way more than I ever would have known if I didn’t decide to try doing this challenge. \n\nAnd no, the deck is not supposed to be good. It’s purely vibes.\n\nThank you for reading (if you made it this far), and thank you for your consideration!\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Eldrazi Winter \n\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"https://archidekt.com/decks/12931478"},"insert":"Eldrazi Winter ‱ (WUBRG Commander deck) ‱ Archidekt"},{"insert":"\n\nA take on the Eldrazi Winter decks where the eldrazi are more similar to the eldritch being caught in the ice like the film The Thing. \n\nThe Edrazi Winter is a commander deck inspired by the standard and modern decks of Eldrazi Winter in 2016. \nCreated for the Monthly Deck Building Challenge of May 2025 this deck is inspired from the name alone. \n\n-Mood Setting \nIn the alternate universe where Urza fought a bitter war against the Eldrazi rather than the Phyrexian's the sylex blast ushered in the Ice Age on Dominaria as Uzra departed having his spark ignited. \nDominaria covered by frozen glaciers much of life, progress and technology went into stasis. However deeper secrets were left deep within the ice. As the age progresses man builds deeper into the ice slowly regaining knowledge and power from artifacts within. It starts slowly, some simple disappearances easily explained through cave ins, being caught in blizzards, and other natural means. Then the wildlife seems to be afflicted with some plague developing unnatural growths of fleshy tendrils. As the ice starts to crack and shatter the scions appear again ready to consume and drain the world until their broodmothers and Titans come crashing forth. \n\n-Deck Build\nThis deck was created to imagine the Eldrazi are the hidden secrets during Dominaria's ice age. So all cards are either, Eldrazi's/depict Eldrazi, Cards that depict ice like several of the freeze cards, or cards from the original ice age set. While it contains some absolute titans of the Eldrazi horde it doesnt have good means to cheat them out or develop very early. It is meant to play the slow lumbering gameplan of quietly building up forces and creatures while occasionally interacting with your opponents through freezing their creatures and stunning them. Until finally you can begin sending larger and larger Eldrazi to overwhelm then. Even the scions can become a deadly force. Ultimately this likely falls around the high bracket 2/low 3 area without having access to more powerful cards and set ups that would allow for much faster casts of the main threats. Likewise the large % of tap lands in the mana base will keep the gameplan slower to hopefully allow a less immediately overwhelming threat from popping up too early and more in theme with a plague breaking out from the ice slowly through the course of a story. \n\n-Win Con\nGiven the build rules I set out for myself the general gameplan is to develop an overwhelming board of either huge eldrazis and tons of small scions and use the commander to buff them all to be terrifying creatures. \n"}]}
