{"ops":[{"insert":"\tThis deck is one of my oldest decks, and also one of my favorites. Tuning this deck over the last 5 years has been incredibly satisfying, as it went from a value-based grindy reanimate deck into a full blown combo deck that can also win with Living Death or combat damage if needed. It can be seriously explosive and win out of nowhere if the mill luck goes your way. The deck is very much a toolbox deck, and it has a good amount of decision points; if that is your jam, then I suggest giving it a shot. I have squirmed my way out of some ridiculous situations with the right plays. The cerebral nature of the deck makes it incredibly satisfying to pilot, although I am often targeted early in my pod because of how explosive the deck can be. And, one of the best parts in my opinion, is that the deck does not have to rely on Sidisi to win; sure, the Embalmer's Tools / Altar of Dementia lines do require her and they are fun to pull off, but an early Jin Gitaxias to swing momentum in your favor followed by a lucky Hermit Druid mill can end games in a hurry even without her on the board. I'd say the power level of the deck is a high 3 to low 4. \n\n\tI built my deck sub-optimally compared to say a cEDH list because I love winning with repeated mill effects like Embalmer's Tools and Altar of Dementia. For this reason the deck focuses on having a high enough creature count that we are likely to hit a creature every 2-3 cards. There are currently over 40 creatures in the deck to make this achievable. I used to have over 50, but the list has optimized a bit more over time. \n\n\tThis deck is incredibly complex to pilot, so writing out the full primer with combo lines will take me a hot minute. Stay tuned! While the full primer is brewing, here is a light breakdown of the categories:\n\n\nGraveyard Protection:\n\tI've found that these cards are excellent to protect the yard in a pinch. They can even be Entombed and then cast with Flashback in response to a graveyard exile effect. They are better than shuffling the entire graveyard back into the deck since we intend to win with Thassa's Oracle, and usually just saving 3 key pieces is enough. This is usually cards like Dread Return, Thassa's Oracle, etc. that we really rely on to close out the game.\n\nLands:\n\tYou'll notice that I run very few basics; this is to maximize Hermit Druid. If you're pod sees Blood Moon effects then this is not advised, but I do not run into this often so the greedy landbase is not an issue for me. Lands of note: Dryad Arbor counts as a creature when milled; Shizo, Death's Storehouse can let us swing with Sidisi safely for her mill trigger; Academy Ruins and Buried can both recur really important artifacts for us (some of our best pieces are artifacts, such as Embalmer's Tools, Altar of Dementia, Mesmeric Orb, etc.); Takenuma, Abandoned Mire is both mill and recursion; Damkor Salvage is both dredge and can come back to our hand when we need a land drop; Cephalid Coliseum is a draw and discard outlet that can help get pieces into the yard. \n\nRamp:\n\tYou'll notice these are all creatures. That's about all there is to it. There are some other important pieces in the self-mill / recursion categories that recur lands, and those are also important since it can be easy to miss land drops with this deck when you are dredging and sources of draw are minimal. \n\nReanimation:\n\tOne of the few categories in the deck that isn't creature-based. These are important for making big tempo plays early (Jin-Gitaxias or Vorinclex), and for bringing back key pieces later on (Muldrotha, Trazyn, or the all-important Thassa's Oracle). Squirming Emeergence is a new all-star since it can recur non-creature cards as well, which is huge. Similarly for Rise of the Witch-King, although here we get a little bit of pseudo removal as well and we can easily sac a Zombie token to fuel it. Note that the Auras can be recurred with Muldrotha later on as well. \n\nReanimation Targets:\n\tThis section is self-evident I think. These cards are only in here for lucky early game swings, and they are otherwise not important to the game play. This category used to be a lot bigger, but over time it has become less of a focus. It is worth noting that many of our big pieces will be targets of our reanimation spells, but I simply put them in other categories. This includes, but it not limited to: Thassa's Oracle, Muldrotha, Trazyn, The Scarab God, Lier, or Mirror-Mad Phantasm. \n\nRecursion:\n\tThis is slightly different from Reanimation so it deserved it's own category. Some of these options are sub-optimal in order to use creatures versions over spells like Regrowth. \n\nRemoval:\n\tAgain, as the deck wants, almost all of these are creatures. I couldn't resist putting in Assassin's Trophy after it became affordable because it is such efficient and versatile removal.\n\nSelf-Mill:\n\tThis is an important category, and contains many of the usual suspects; dredge is a typical winner in the deck. Hermit Druid and Mirror-Mad Phantasm provide the big mills, while others like Satyr Wayfinder are to get the ball rolling early. Mesmeric Orb is an obvious banger, but it does eat removal often since other players do not like being milled. Blossoming Tortoise and Eccentric Farmer are really nice to help us hit land drops, and the card selection that Underrealm Lich gives is excellent. I like Shigeki a lot as early mill that ensures you hit land drops, and then late game it can recur important pieces. That versatility is excellent in the deck, albeit mana intensive. I added a lot more of these Eccentric Farmer/Sage of Days type cards recently because I was missing land drops, and they have been a nice addition. \n\nWin Conditions:\n\tThe final and most important category. As I tend to do, I've included the tutors in the win condition category. This does not mean that they should be used solely to find a win con; there are plenty of times where an early tutor into a value piece (such as draw or ramp) to get ahead is a winning move. And, of course, using them effectively comes with familiarity with the deck. \n\n\tMy favorite way to win is with non-determinant mill chains with Altar of Dementia or Embalmer's Tools. A big dig into the deck can unlock other pieces you need, such as Dread Return and Muldrotha, to continue a big turn that might result in a win on the spot. Tribute Mage is an important tutor in the deck since it is a creature that can grab either of these artifacts; similarly for Dimir Infiltrator although it is more versatile and can grab reanimation effects. Trazyn can be insane if both of these artifacts are in the graveyard, as it means our zombies can tap for Embalmer's Tools and then sac to Altar of Dementia. He is an insane card and definitely the most important addition to the deck recently. Necrotic Ooze can combo to mill our whole library with Mirror-Mad Phantasm in the graveyard, so that's why it's here; but, it's also just useful to be able to copy abilities of other creatures such as Hermit Druid, Havengul Lich, or The Scarab God. If you have a reanimate in hand, using Buried Alive to bin Necrotic Ooze and Mirror-Mad Phantasm can just about win on the spot; once you've milled out and Dread Return and Thassa's Oracle are both in the yard it is pretty much GG barring interaction. This is one of the few combo lines I will get into for now.\n\n\tThis deck is amazingly fun to pilot if you enjoy complex decks and many decision points. It is fun to think back after a game ends and often you'll see an action you might have missed which could have gotten you out of tough spot. There are an amazing numbers of interesting interactions in the deck, and given the somewhat random nature of self-mill you tend to need to find ways to win using different cards every game. Even if you typically end the game with Thassa's Oracle, getting your whole deck into the graveyard happens differently in every game. And, even if you use Embalmer's Tools or Altar of Dementia often, the path you need to take to get either one on the battlefield each game is often wildly different. Solving that puzzle is fun and never gets old. I highly recommend this commander if you enjoy toolbox, risilience, and cerebral play. It might be slow to play at first, and there are many mistakes to be made no doubt, but getting better at piloting this deck is a blast. Enjoy, and cheers! \n"}]}
