Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"\tAs soon as I saw "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Miirym, Sentinel Wyrm"}},{"insert":" spoiled from Battle for Baldur's Gate I knew I needed to build this deck. As a huge fan of Temur creature based strategies, and the ability to win through combat or combo, I was beyond stoked. This is a combo deck that wins by generating treasure tokens in order to storm out Dragons (and token copies) onto the battlefield while dealing direct damage with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scourge of Valkas"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon Tempest"}},{"insert":" (both of which I will refer to as \"dragon pingers\"). But, obviously, it can also win through combat as a back up. Power level-wise, I would say this is a high 3. \n\n\tOk, let's break down the categories in the deck and discuss a few potential combo lines. \n\nRemoval:\n\tSince this deck can require some time to get moving we need to be able to stop an opponent from winning. Also, we are often biding our time in the early turns in order to not draw too much attention so this is a perfect time to slow down our opponents. Of course the control package is also useful here, but we often want to hold onto a counter spell to protect our own explosive win once we're ready to pull it off. Often this just requires keeping Miirym around for a turn rotation to manage the win, so often saving a counterspell for that turn is worth it. \n\nRamp:\n\tObviously, a Dragon deck has a high mana cost to operate, so we have a lot of ramp available to us and we are often happy to play some on both turns 2 and 3. \n\nDraw:\n\tCard draw is king, so we of course need plenty. While "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rhystic Study"}},{"insert":" is certainly broken, and excellent to play early, many of these options are better suited for the turn where we attempt to combo out. With Miirym out, most of our Dragons will draw us 2 cards off of a draw engine like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Elemental Bond"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kindred Discovery"}},{"insert":" ; of course, if we've managed to either clone Miirym or have "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Roaming Throne"}},{"insert":" out then we can draw even more. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Greater Good"}},{"insert":" is insane here, as our Dragons have high power and often we can sac a token copy to curate our hand with another impactful Dragon. \n\nClones:\n\tCloning any of our Dragons is huge, particularly since we can clone a non-legendary copy of a legendary dragon. Ideally we will clone Miirym with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spark Double"}},{"insert":" , because that will cause Miirym to trigger giving us a total of 3 Miiryms and we can most likely end the game in short order from there. \n\nControl / Protection:\n\tThis section is almost entirely for protecting Miirym. We need our commander on the board at the beginning of any turn in which we plan to win, other than in a few instances where we can produce absurd amounts of mana (see "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Old Gnawbone"}},{"insert":", or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Copper Dragon"}},{"insert":" ) and then play Miirym and more dragons in the post combat main phase. \n\nUncategorized Dragons:\n\tThis category is very loose, as some of these can absolutely be influential in winning the game, and I mostly grouped these here because they contribute to our game plan in a variety of ways. As I said above, making big mana with Klauth, Old Gnawbone, or Ancient Copper Dragon can allow us to storm out a ton of Dragons in a turn. If we have either of our Dragon pingers out this will win us the game. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" triggers to make even more Dragon tokens when we cast other Dragons, so this can certainly contribute to a combo win with our Dragon pingers out as well. She is also a big one for winning with combat, and if we are lucky to be pulling this off in the pre combat main phase and we have a haste enabler then a combat win is definitely on the table. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thrakkus the Butcher"}},{"insert":" is another excellent Dragon to drop (and double) with a haste enabler out to win the game via combat. Miirym will just one shot an opponent--ideally the one with the highest life total--after her power is doubled twice, and the rest of the dragons on the table should be able to close out the other two opponents. Since we generate a lot of treasures, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldspan Dragon"}},{"insert":" is simply excellent for making our treasures tap for extra mana. Also at 5 mana it's an easy cast, and can net us a treasure the turn it comes down. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Silver Dragon"}},{"insert":" is self-explanatory, and clearly problematic with haste. Note that Thrakkus, Ancient Silver, and Lathliss are not essential and may eventually be cut for more counter spells and/or tutors to tighten up the combo. \n\n\n\nSynergy:\n\t"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Roaming Throne"}},{"insert":" is a busted card in general, and it is absolutely insane in this deck. Coming down as a Dragon allows Miirym to copy him, and when the Throne doubles that trigger you'll end up with a total of 3 Thrones on the field. Now every Dragon that enters will cause Miirym to trigger 3 additional times, making 4 copies and a grand total of 5 Dragons for the price of one. Oh, and Ward is a triggered ability also, so they also effectively give Miirym extra wards which is just incredible gravy on top. Even playing the Throne before Miirym is fine, as it gives her Ward 4 and the additional trigger. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sneak Attack"}},{"insert":" is also broken here, as we can pay 1 for our Dragons and we get to keep the copies; with either of our Dragon pingers and a draw engine this can end a game in short order. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ghostly Flicker"}},{"insert":" can save key pieces from removal and then trigger Miirym again when those Dragons ETB, or be used on the turn we intend to combo out. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bala Ged Recovery // Bala Ged Sanctuary"}},{"insert":" is our only recursion piece so I chose to hide it in this category. \n\n\nWin Conditions: \n\tAs I tend to do, I've included the tutors in the win condition category. This does not mean that they should be used solely to find a win con; there are plenty of times where an early tutor into a value piece (such as draw or ramp) to get ahead is a winning move. And, of course, using them effectively comes with familiarity with the deck.\n\tTutors that go straight to the board are incredible in this deck, especially "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Neoform"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldritch Evolution"}},{"insert":" where we can cheat on the cost and sacrifice a token to get a new dragon on the cheap--hopefully with a copy. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sarkhan's Triumph"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Worldly Tutor"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chord of Calling"}},{"insert":" also help us find key pieces. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ganax, Astral Hunter"}},{"insert":" is incredible for generating mana as our Dragons enter, and in tandem with a draw engine allows for some explosive turns to close out a game. The other mana producing Dragons in the deck could also go in this category, but they are not necessarily as consistent; "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Klauth, Unrivaled Ancient"}},{"insert":" gets an honorable mention though because he can absolutely end the game if you get to swing with two of them on the field. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Astral Dragon"}},{"insert":" is nutty, and mostly goes here because it causes so many Dragons to enter at once for massive pings from our dragon pingers. It can also do insane things like copy our draw engines, which is an amazing bonus. And of course, the win conditions themselves are "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon Tempest"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scourge of Valkas"}},{"insert":". Dragon Tempest is incredibly cheap to cast and also acts as a haste enabler, but it is not tutorable in our colors. Scourge of Valkas also hopefully gets a token copy from Miirym which makes it even more deadly. Once one of these hits the table our goal is drop as many Dragons as possible in short order. With a draw engine out (I like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Greater Good"}},{"insert":" a lot here), Miirym, a mana generator like Ganax, and a Dragon pinger we should be able to close out a win on the spot. \n\n\tThat's it for Miirym! She is an incredibly potent commander, and this is the deck I pick when I am looking to be archenemy from the start. Once Miirym sticks, turns are explosive and scratch both the Timmy itch with the big bad Dragons and also the Johnny itch with the complex combo lines available to you. The order in which Dragons are cast matters a lot, and since the deck is often targeted immediately it's paramount to play optimally or we will be focused out of the game. It's important to know when to go all in and when to take it slow and hold up some mana for interaction. All said, I love this deck and it gets me excited every time I pick it up. Even the original version that was just a pile of big dumb Dragons was a blast to play, but this version is far more powerful and consistent. As always, please leave any comments, questions or suggestions you may have down below! Cheers \n"}]}
