Development Update - Deck Stats

{"ops":[{"insert":"Hello brewers,"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nToday, we released a significant update to the stats presented on deck pages!\n\nAs before, deck stats can be found on any deck page directly beneath the deck itself. On desktop, you can also use the \"Pin stats above\" button (located in the top right of your stats area) to lock a condensed version of your deck stats to the right of your deck area. This is a departure from the deprecated right panel we've had in the past, but have found the change to be far more aesthetically pleasing. We hope you agree!\n\n"},{"insert":{"image":"https://i.imgur.com/TfPhYpw.gif"}},{"insert":"\n\nLet's dig into the details.\n\nPresented data "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWe've greatly expanded on the deck data available. The goal of this view is to provide users with an at-a-glance reference for some of the most basic deck stats available. It is very similar to the stats that were available pre-update. \n\nWe'd also like to address the pastry in the room: Pie charts. While we maintain that the old pie chart provided an at times confusing and/or incomplete look at your deck's mana production/costs, we've been convinced that it has a place as a quick reference to make sure your production is on the right track. The three dot menu next to \"Color Cost and Production\" in \"Condensed view\" offers an option to \"Display as pie chart\". This choice is cached to your browser. \n\n"},{"insert":{"image":"https://i.imgur.com/ahSaOtC.png"}},{"insert":"\n\nWe hope this will assuage some concerns regarding the update. As always, we are grateful for those who have provided feedback!\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Having a way to get a 'condensed' view akin to the previous view would be very appreciated; everything is now segmented away into its own sections so you need more clicks to achieve the same result, and can't quickly reference info because you can only have the one category.\n\nThe pie chart will also be sorely missed. Big bars taking up a bunch of space just doesn't visualise the information as well IMO, though having percentage numbers is nice and in some contexts the bars are preferable - just not all scenarios, so forcibly removing one for the other is frustrating.\n\nEvery time there's a change, it feels like two steps forward and one step back - the brand-new stuff is always amazing, but the modifications to existing systems always seem to come at the cost of being... Clunky, I guess?\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"I can respect your opinion that you don't care for the new view. We knew going into this that we were removing a lot of the density of the older design. We did so completely intentionally.\n\nWe've taken a lot more to watching users use the site via user testing as of late and noticed that in more than a handful of cases, the old UI would confuse people. There could be a lot of different reasons for this, but for what we've seen/ heard from users is that the old UI was difficult to parse without already knowing how it worked. Stuff like having options under menus that weren't visually coherent with the rest of the site; stuff like needing to hover over elements with no clear indication to the user; not being able to configure things to tell you any information that wasn't already there, etc. One of the major goals of this update was to reduce the density of data in an attempt to reduce the learning curve. From the feedback gotten durring development I think we've succeeded with that. \n\nThe pi charts specifically were a big hang up for some people. Once a user understood that the point of them was to align the colors, then they kinda clicked, but we couldn't reasonably teach users that without a really hamfisted tutorial that they probably wouldn't have read. Data denstiy is nice, but when people are unable to grok the context, it doesn't matter how small the on screen footprint is, the visualization has failed. We're hoping that by adding more context, and the ability to see proper numbers without needing to know to hover the charts will help those people.\n\nI am sorry you don't care for the changes we've made. And where possible, I'm happy to try to add some streamlining.\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"This feels like an accurate assessment to me as well. All the added ways to sort and focus and whatnot seems interesting, although I am a bit dubious about how useful that actually will be for the majority of people. The built in probability calculator is greatly appreciated and will save me from going somewhere else. \n\nHowever, the condensed view of the stats seems straight up worse than the previous version. Bars instead of a pie chart is the most obvious one and I find it a bit hard to believe that a bunch of bars is easier for people to absorb than a pie chart. Not being able to see the quantity of cards in Category+Type at a glance is annoying as well since I used that frequently. \n\nI'm sure I will adapt over time, and some of my feelings could simply be new=bad, but it does seem like there are some valid criticisms here.\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"What an upgrade!\n\nTruly great work. Deck stats are one of my favorite parts about Archidekt, to see it get some love and upgrades is awesome. Can't wait to explore the new template/features. I would love to see a version of these stats that encompassed all of my decks or all the decks in specific folders. Not necessarily everything because those features may not apply or be useful in a broad sense, but would be cool to see nonetheless. \n\nKeep up that top-notch work, it's always appreciated.\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Sadly have to say that at least to me it looks like the stats, which is one of the best part of archidekt, went from easy to read representation of tons of data to scattered and time consuming to put together what previously could be seen in few seconds.\nI wholeheartedly agree with larkinz's comment about pie chart and problems with horizontal presentation. \nThe pie chart model is the easiest, most informative and space efficient way to present the data such as mana consumption/requirement.\n\nWhat I am also greatly missing is information"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":" in one chart "},{"insert":"as we used to have.\nTo some extent this is also the problem with the new mana presentations but highlighted in other categories.\nMana curve analysis is great example: we used to have one chart with multi coloured columns which gave us the overall mana curve as well as the dissection of the ratio of the card types in each category. Now this data, and other similar data, is scattered into 8+ charts which makes reading and combining the data incredibly difficult as none of the charts actually compare any data.\n\nI find many of the updates overall nice, as I am mainly using computer the right side editing table is handy addition and screen provides enough room for both.\nHowever, I do think the drawback of weaken data analysis and data presentation is quite high price to pay as in the end when the deck hits the playmat the overall balance is all that matters.\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Nice update overall, with some minor issues:\n\n1) I strongly agree with others about "},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"missing the pie chart for color pips"},{"insert":". A color pie chart is just easier and faster to read compared to having these horizontal bars which you need to hover over with the mouse to see the total color pips.\n\n2) The data in the \""},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Quantity of"},{"insert":"\" section being displayed horizontally makes it very hard to read, it should be displayed vertically like it used to before. Or at least add a button to change the flex direction, so people can choose their preference. I'd rather have to scroll a bit than turn my head sideways to read the data.\n\n\nAnother issue I have (related to a previous update) that's been a major pain is the grouped categories being displayed alphabetically from A-Z horizontally instead of vertically as it used to be. Really wish I had an option to revert it back to A-Z vertically, because that update has really messed up how my deck lists were displayed. I know there's \"Draggable categories\" now, but it's a major time sink having to do manual category sorting for each new copy of a deck, while it just used to be sorted automatically.\n"}]}
